What are the key learning points of a miss pass?

What are the key learning points of a miss pass?

Think about why you're using the miss pass, is it to get the ball wide, quick or as part of a ploy?

The emphasis should be placed on the strength of pass, and the middle (missed player) to:

  • keep depth so as not to obstruct the pass
  • take a line of run towards the ball carrier to offer a 'short pass' option
  • sell the decoy run to the opposition, i.e. hands up as target and call for the ball as usual

Coaching points to think about should be:

  • practice both miss pass in front and behind
  • players ability and strength to make the length of pass with accuracy

Problems to look for:

  • missed player running too flat obstructing the pass or straight and not 'selling' the decoy
  • accuracy will initially suffer in the pursuit for length

Hope this helps
